An earthquake of just 3 or 4 seconds long, has been felt in Torrevieja at 5:45am

The three seconds and 3,1 points on the Richter scale earthqueake has been felt in Torrevieja today, 5th of February 2012, at around 4:45 a.m.

The National Institute of Geology has confirmed an earthquake struck the Costa Blanca at around 4.45 on Sunday Morning (5th February).

According to the National Geografic Institute, the epicentre of this earthquake was pinpointed at a depth of just 11km located at sea, in Cabo de Palos, about 15 km from Torrevieja and 12 kilometers deep.

No damage has been caused at all apart from the surprise and nerviosism of those Torrevieja citizens who felt the tremor.

Reports that the ground also moved in surrounding areas including Pilar de la Horadada and San Pedro del Pinatar to the South, and Almoradi and Guardamar to the West and North of Torrevieja.

The silence of the night, has made this tremor became much more noticeable, causing great alarm among people who are afraid to hear how the glass of the windows of their houses shaking.

In the last 12 months, there have been several tremors have been felt in the Torrevieja area, although of limited intensity.

The largest earthquake has been felt in recent months, was on 23 March 2011, reaching an intensity of 3.1 degrees, but had lower sensory impact occur at 11:28 a.m.

Almost two centuries ago Torrevieja was devastated by an earthquake.

On the 21th of March 1829, a 6,6 point on the Richter scale earthquake destroyed Torrevieja and many villages of the Vega Baja. As a result, 389 people died, 32 of which died in Torrevieja.

It is well documented that the area in and around Torrevieja is settled on fault lines: Benijuzar and Benijofar, Guardamar, and Torrevieja.

Fallas 2012 Valencia 15th - 19th March 2012

The idea of Las Fallas de Valencia was first cooked up by the medieval guilds, especially the wood workers who swept up spare pieces of wood, shavings and junk into a huge bonfire on the feast day of their patron saint, St Joseph. As the inter-guild competition heated up, passions flared, so did creativity and bonfires now included bizarre effigies (fallas) of despised rivals. And so began a tradition that evolved into the major tourist attraction of Valencia. In the days of yore, effigies were made of unpopular people or events and strung up across streets and burnt. Today this still happens though the materials used are more sophisticated with these effigies being mounted on floats and platforms which are wheeled in a processions down the city streets.

Celebrations at Las Fallas de Valencia

The five day festival is a carnival of bonfires, fireworks, parades, shows, and other festivities, as it also celebrates the arrival of spring. Every day the day starts at 8 am sharp with a ‘wakeup call or la Desperata as it is called. Bands march down the main streets of the town and firecrackers are burned as peppy music rents the air.

At 2 pm it’s time for the La Mascleta which takes place in the different neighborhoods of the city – this is a run up to the main event of Mascleta held on 19 March at the Plaça de l’Ajuntamen. This is when fire crackers and pyrotechnics rule the roost and competitions are held to choose the brightest best fire! Prizes are also awarded for the most ingenious use of left over materials.

The spectacular event of garlanding Our Lady of the Forsaken takes place on 17 and 18 March at 4 pm when people offer flower garlands to the patron saint.

Every night there are firework displays in the city and the final one on the last night is the most magnificent with firecrackers and fireworks lighting up the skies.

Las Fallas gets under way on March 16, when all competing Fallas have to be completed. Taking in some cases up to a year to plan, design and build, these models are spread all over the city for the festive week. Some encapsulate entire scenes from cartoons and fairytales using sets of dwarf-sized figures called ninots.

The focus turns to religion on the following two days, with a Catholic procession known as La Ofrenda. At this time fallas makers ceremoniously bring flowers to the city’s central Plaza of the Virgin, which are used to decorate an enormous wooden-framed statue of Mary. The procession pageants that trail through the center of the city to the plaza on these days are a colorful and pretty sight, with many groups in period costumes and sassy Latin marching bands.

One feature of Las Fallas you definitely can’t ignore is the fireworks displays that blast all around town for the duration of the festival. Occurring three times daily, the fireworks kick off with an 8am display known as la despertà. At 2pm at the main Plaza del Ayuntamiento there is a gigantic fireworks display called la mascletà that centers around a 120-kilo gunpowder blast. Perhaps the most special of the three is el castillo, the midnight fireworks display that reaches its height on the final night of the festival, dubbed la nit de foc, or “night of fire”.

The climax of Las Fallas is la cremà, the night when each of the models in turn is set alight between 10pm and 1am. This dramatic, unusual display may appear like a harrowing street riot at first, but once you adjust your eyes you can enjoy the festival atmosphere and communal sense of seasonal renewal.

Fallas Museum in Gandia

From Friday February 24 until Friday March 9, there will be a free exhibition of this year’s selected puppets at the Fallas Museum in Gandia.

This museum is unique in the world for being the first interactive museum and multimedia the Valencia festival for excellence: ‘The Fallas’.

The Fallas festival in Gandia is celebrated on March 19, but with this museum it is possible for visitors to get to know about the party at other times.

It has been nearly four years since it opened in 2008 and since then this interpretive centre has become a landmark for those who want to learn more about this traditional party in general and its relationship with the city of Gandia in particular.

The Fallas Museum of Gandia is a 4,500 square meter multipurpose building and boasts a large theatre with seating capacity for 572, as well as several meetings rooms, offices a terrace cafe, the museum and parking.

“It was built not only to offer information to the public, but also to serve the demands of companies and institutions and provide technical resources,” said museum manager Pere Cremades.

“The Interpretation Centre is a modern Fallas museum showing visitors the traditions and customs related to the Valencian festival par excellence.

Its history, types of clothing, which are hand-made, add-ons for the grooming of Fallas, its relationship to culture and society, the pyrotechnics, the monuments and the creation process.

It also explains the ‘Casal Faller’ social and local Fallas of the different associations, and finally the music and ‘llibret’ as a sign of satirical literary creativity of them.” This is all explained in an interactive way through multimedia.

“All the texts are written in Spanish, Valencian and English,” said Cremades. “We have visitors of various nationalities and ages including groups of university and school students, tourists, families, pensioner and social groups.”

In addition to the museum, visitors can enjoy other activities. “School groups can complete their visit with craft workshops,” said Cremades.

“There are also frequent exhibitions and once a year we celebrate Favila, the fair of the Fallas festival. We are also creating a workshop for adults.”

Costa lot less! Holidays in Spain on the rise as prices at resorts drop by 40%

Spain could attract a new wave of British holidaymakers following evidence that resort prices have crashed by as much as 40 per cent compared to five years ago.

A fall in local prices on everything from a restaurant meal to suncream has combined with the fact that the pound is at a two year high against the euro to make the Costas more affordable.

The claims come from an annual survey conducted by the Post Office, which measures the prices of eight items in resorts across 33 destinations around the world

Spain comes out as the second cheapest destination with a price of £37.72 for the eight items, while Sri Lanka, which has seen serious political unrest, was the best value at just £27.95.

At the other end of the scale was Australia at a staggering £115.69 for the same items, together with Barbados, Singapore and New Zealand.

The number of visits by Britons to Spain has slumped by more than three million over the past five years, coming down to less than 10.5million

High prices, the cost of living squeeze and a desire among Britons to try new and more exotic locations have all played their part in the fall.

However, the Post Office research suggests Spain will now become more attractive, particularly at a time when people are desperate to save money.

The firm’s Holiday Money Report concluded: ‘Resort prices in the Costa del Sol are now 40per cent lower than five years ago, when we conducted the first price barometer.

‘The cheaper cost of travel to Spain will make it a compelling choice for bargain hunters. So does the rising value of the UK pound - up 6.4 per cent against the euro in the past three months.’

The eight items included in the price comparison are a cup of coffee in a bar or café; a bottle of local beer; a can of Coca-Cola; a 1.5 litre bottle of mineral water from a supermarket; a bottle of suncream; insect repellent; a pack of cigarettes; and a three course evening meal for two adults, including a bottle of house wine.

The fact that the selection of items is small, while they are not bought from exactly the same outlet every year, suggests the figures can be skewed. However, they give a general indication of the shift in prices.

The researchers found resort prices have risen in two-thirds of the destinations it surveyed. The biggest rises were recorded in Kenya, where the basket was 52 per cent more expensive than a year ago, and Portugal, where the increase found was 39 per cent.

However, the report found that sterling is stronger against 29 other major currencies than a year ago, which should help offset higher resort prices.

Turkey has seen a tourism boom in recent years on the basis of its perception as a cheap option. This year, it only placed 17th in terms of the cheapest option, while it was 60per cent more expensive than Spain.

The Post Office head of travel money, Sarah Munro, said: ‘Given that sterling is worth around 20 per cent more than a year ago against the Turkish lira, we expected to see a lower barometer cost for Turkey, especially as the country had a disappointing 2011.

‘However, we were surprised to find that local costs have actually risen by 21 per cent and it is only the strong sterling exchange rate that is masking that increase.

‘It will be interesting to see how Turkish resorts respond to the challenge presented by Spain and Portugal. With Greek tourism also facing a fight for survival, we could see a price war between the eastern and western Med in 2012.’
Italy came out as the most expensive European destination with the basket of items costing £89.03.

Miss Munro said: ‘The message that came out clearly from our holiday budgeting research was that 2012 will be all about affordability. Holidays may still be a priority but they are not a necessity and people will not knowingly get into debt to fund them.

‘The winning destinations will be those that offer good value not just for flights and accommodation, but for tourist staples like meals out and drinks.”

‘However, it will pay people to keep a watchful eye on exchange rate movements as well as considering easy ways to save money.’

Vuelta a Espana - La Vuelta 2012 route announced

The route of the 67th edition of La Vuelta has been presented in Navarre, with 21 gruelling stages awaiting the riders.

The tour will begin with a team time-trial in Pamplona, Navarre and continue into the Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon, Catalonia and Galicia. Later, the tour will move to Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla Leon, before the final stages in Madrid.

The Vuelta kicks off on August 18 with a 16.2 km team time trial in Pamplona along some of the streets used for the city's famous 'bull-runs'.

The first of seven mountain-top finishes comes on stage three to the Monte Arrate in the Basque Country, with a brief incursion into the Pyrenees of Andorra on stage eight.

Following a rare visit to Barcelona and a lengthy 1,200 km transfer to Galicia, the second week's hilly 42 km individual time trial and three summit finishes in northern Spain in as many days will likely decide the race overall.

Stage 18's dauntingly steep climb to the infamous Covadonga Lakes, home to some of western Europe's last wolves, is followed by an unprecedented 23-km ascent to Cuitu Negro in the Picos de Europa mountain range on stage 19.

The race's final showdown is a repeat of 2010's ascent along three kilometres of rough cement track to the Bola del Mundo summit finish, close to Madrid.

Samuel Sanchez was among the riders at the presentation, and he said: "My principal targets this season are the Tour de France and the Olympic Games. My favourite for winning La Vuelta is Joaquim Rodriguez"

Meanwhile, Denis Menchov said: "The Tour de France is my objective, but I think I will ride in La Vuelta. We have not got any problem with Joaquim (Rodriguez) for the leadership within Katusha."

Barcelona government may reconsider F1 grand prix deal

Catalunya's government says it may need to rethink the hosting of Formula 1 and MotoGP events given the difficult economic situation.

"We could reconsider the hosting of Formula 1 or motorcycle grands prix," Andreu Mas-Colell, Catalunya's minister for economy, told RAC1 radio.

"It is not clear to us that we can afford them in the current situation.

"It is not the first thing we will reconsider, but in times like these we must look very closely at where we spend the money."

Mas-Colell's comments come after the Valencian government said it wanted to renegotiate its contract with Bernie Ecclestone in order to reduce costs.

Valencia has hosted the European Grand Prix since the 2008 season.

The Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona has been a part of the Formula 1 calendar since 1991, but officials said last year that the future of the event beyond this season would depend on economic factors.

Barcelona has a deal to host the race until 2016 and Mas-Colell said the situation must be looked at carefully in order to make sure breaking a contract does not cost more than hosting the race.

"There are contracts that are more expensive to maintain than to break," he added.

Valencia grand prix seeks to renegotiate Formula 1 deal

The Valencia government will seek to renegotiate its contract with Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone as further doubt is cast over the Spanish event.

Jose Ciscar, the vice-president of the Generalitat Valenciana, said on Thursday that the government must focus on reducing the costs generated by events like the F1 race.

"The big events are under full and absolute review. They are not viable as they have been until now," Ciscar said. "The big events have had an important value up until now but the circumstances force us to prioritise."

Ciscar said the Valencia government will write to Ecclestone to try to renegotiate its contract.

The vice-president did not go as far as saying the event is under threat, but admitted that "nothing can be ruled out".

"With contracts signed, we can't be imprudent because the penalty could cost us more. We have to find balanced solutions," he added.

Valencia has hosted the European Grand Prix since the 2008 season. In 2009, organisers signed a new, five-year contract with Ecclestone.

The shops of Port of Javea, in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development, is hosting a special fair during the long holiday weekend of the “Constitución” in which everyone will be able to enjoy the shopping, entertainment and children's activities and start soaking up the Christmas spirit. According to the president of the Aduanas del Mar Business and Trade Association (ACEAM), Geovanny Sanchez, this year they have chosen to feature local craftsmen who make their own products rather than bring in outside craftsmen. The businesses in the Port have also decided to reward customers who make purchases upwards of 15 euros with gift vouchers redeemable for horse and buggy rides, bouncy castles or a giant ball that children can enter and, with adult supervision, roll around the Plaza Jaume I, where the fair is to be held.

The local shops, bars and restaurants that participate will be easily recognized thanks to the red carpet at the door and the stars they will place in their windows. These include an array of clothing and accessories shops, jewelry shops, gift and decoration, perfumeries, hairdressers and beauty salons, bookshops, food shops and delicatessens. The restaurateurs of the Port in Marina Española, Andrés Lambert and Cristo del Mar will also be offering special Christmas fair menus from Saturday December 3rd to Tuesday December 6th, from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm and from 5.00 to 8.00 pm.
At the fair based in the Plaza Jaume I, visitors will also be able to shop at the artisan posts from the Arenal or the Bruja Etreus magic shop, or enjoy savouries from the Oliva Negra mobile snack bar, which will be offering crepes, soups, hot chocolate and wine. With Christmas decorations and the sound of carols in the air, the fair will host the first visit by one of the postmen of the Magi, who have already begun collecting letters from children. Javea prepares for the Gota Fria, heavy rain season

The councillor of public Safety, Juan Ortolá, has held a meeting with all the security services and voluntary organisations to plan and co-ordinate their functions in the face of possible heavy rain. The councillor explained that the high temperatures occurring during this month of September combined with a sea temperature of around 26° are risk factors that could lead the occurrence of a “gota fría”. Therefore the department of Environment and Services is coordinating efforts to clean the drainage systems in areas most prone to flooding, such as Avenida de la Fontana, Avenida de la Libertad and Calle Niza in the Arenal and Calle Santísimo Cristo del Mar in the port. These had previously been cleared but will now be checked to remove any detritus that may have collected recently.

The department has also prepared a list of ravines and channels that need to be cleaned as well as areas which may pose problems, such as areas of bamboo cane and eucalyptus growing on the river bed of the Río Gorgos which could block bridges if torn from the surface by floodwater.

The gathering, which was attended by officers from the Policía Local, Guardia Civil, the provincial fire service, Protección Civil and the volunteer fire service of Balcón al Mar, also served to review the tasks to which each group has been assigned according to the municipal ‘Emergency Plan’ and the best way to coordinate them as well as external resources that can be called on when necessary.

The town hall has decided to transfer immediately to all schools, nurseries and education centres the notices and orange alerts determined by the ‘Emergency Plan’ before the risk of heavy rains so that they can decide on the necessary preventative measures. In addition, a booklet has been prepared with all the recommendations in case of storms and flooding which will be provided to parents of all students and at the general level, leaflets will be distributed amongst residents. The councillor stressed that this type of action is not to frighten residents but to prepare everyone on how to react if faced with such a difficult situation as the floods that devastated much of the area just four years ago.

Exhibition Fair 700 years (from 1311 to 2011)

From September 16 to October 12 the House of Culture Marques de Gonzalez de Quiros, hosts the exhibition 700 years of Fair from 1311-2011, to celebrate this occasion. Curated by Alvaro Garcia, manager of IMAB shows the evolution of the show from this document to the present, in chronology and images. The exhibition can be visited free Monday through Saturday from 10 to 14 and 18 to 20 h.

Visiting days will be Thursday September 29, Friday September 30 and October 1 at 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 17.00, 18.00 and 19.00 hours. And on Sunday 2 and Monday 3 October at 11.00, 12.00 and 13.00 hours.

29 and September 30 will share a total of 78 entries divided between visiting hours and a maximum of two tickets per person. On October 1st 72 tickets will be distributed and the remaining 36 days.

MAGA-open days.

Throughout the Fair and Festival Days, visitors who come to the MAGA will:

- Visiting the offices of the Old Hospital of San Marcos, now home of MAGA, founded by Alfonso building the Elder in the fourteenth century.

- Know the permanent exhibition focusing on the prehistory of the region of the Costa Blanca, are the remains found in the Cave and Cave Bolomor Parpalló.

- Participate in the demonstrations to be held in the "prehistoric settlement" installed in the courtyard. Visitors can learn about the activities of daily life of prehistoric societies, as ornament, as they hunted, such as cooking, where they lived, as did fire, which sounds heard ....

These demonstrations will be held on Friday and Saturday at 12h00 and 17h00, and Sunday and Monday at 12h00.

Exposición 700 años de Feria (desde 1311 hasta 2011)

Desde el 16 de septiembre y hasta el 12 de octubre la Casa de Cultura Marqués de González de Quirós, acoge la exposición 700 años de Feria desde 1311 hasta 2011, para celebrar esta efeméride. Comisariada por Álvaro García, gerente del IMAB recoge la evolución de la feria desde este documento hasta la actualidad, en cronología e imágenes. La muestra se puede visitar gratuitamente de lunes a sábado en horario de 10 a 14 y de 18 a 20 h.

-Visitas guiadas al Palacio Ducal.

Los días de visita serán jueves 29 de septiembre, viernes 30 de septiembre y 1 de octubre a las 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 17.00, 18.00 y 19.00 horas. Y el domingo 2 y lunes 3 de octubre a las 11.00, 12.00 y 13.00 horas.

Los días 29 y 30 de septiembre se repartirán un total de 78 entradas repartidas entre las horas de visita y dos entradas como máximo por persona. El día 1 de octubre se repartirán 72 entradas y el resto de días 36.

-MAGA jornadas de puertas abiertas.

A lo largo de las Jornadas de Feria y Fiestas, los visitantes que se acercan hasta el MAGA podrán:

- Visitar las dependencias de el Antiguo Hospital de San Marcos , actual sede del MAGA, edificio fundado por Alfonso el Viejo en el siglo XIV.

- Conocer la exposición permanente centrada en la Prehistoria de la comarca de la Safor, destacan los restos encontrados en la Cueva del Bolomor y la Cueva del Parpalló.

- Participar de las demostraciones que se realizarán en el "Poblado prehistórico" instalado en el patio. Los visitantes podrán conocer las actividades de la vida cotidiana de las sociedades prehistóricas: como se adornaban, como cazaban, como cocinaban, donde vivían, como hacían fuego, qué sonidos escuchaban ….

Estas demostraciones se realizarán el viernes y sábado a las 12h00 y 17h00, y el domingo y lunes a las 12h00.

- Exhibition of 700 years of the Gandia Fira (1311-2011)

From September 16 to October 12 the House of Culture Marques de Gonzalez de Quiros, hosts the exhibition of 700 years of the Gandia Fira 1311-2011. Curated by Alvaro Garcia, manager of IMAB shows the evolution of the fair from start to the present, in chronology and images. The exhibition can be visited free Monday through Saturday from 10 to 14 and 18 to 20 h.

-Guided tours of the Palazzo Ducale.

Visiting days will be Thursday September 29, Friday September 30 and October 1 at 11.00, 12.00, 13.00, 17.00, 18.00 and 19.00 hours. And on Sunday 2 and Monday 3 October at 11.00, 12.00 and 13.00 hours.

29 and September 30 will share a total of 78 entries between visiting hours and a maximum of two tickets per person. On October 1st 72 tickets will be distributed and the remaining 36 days.

MAGA-open days.

A along the Fira i Festes Days, visitors who come to the Maga may:

Alicante-Valencia rail link land grab

THE REGIONAL public works council has released details of the land that is to be expropriated ahead of the building of the Alicante to Valencia coastal rail link.

The building of the rail line will see property in Alicante, Muchamiel, Campello, San Vicente, Agost, Monforte, Villajoyosa and Benidorm expropriated.

Owners of the affected land now have two months in which to view the plans in their respective town halls and present their appeals should they wish to do so.

Last April, regional government reached an agreement with the public works ministry under which it agreed to build the 82 kilometre stretch of the line between Alicante and Dénia and the ministry would build the remaining 58 kilometres from Dénia to Gandía.

The cost of the project has been put at 1,500 million euros and it envisages a rail link between Alicante airport and Benidorm that will move people between the two destinations in just 36 minutes. Benidorm is listed as being one of the 50 most populated urban areas in Spain yet it is the only one that does not have a proper main line rail link.

Gandia Town Hall has closed Gandia TV after 13 years of operations.

Spanish media reports that Gandia Town Hall has closed its local TV channel "Gandia Televisio", with the loss of 30 jobs.

Reports say that the closure of Gandia TV is a temporary measure, while the correct broadcast licence is obtained. This is due to a regional Valencian government case against Gandia TV for not having the correct licence.

Confusion About Free UK Television in Spain - Freeview Or Freesat?

Many people are confused about whether they can receive free UK television in Spain. The subject of what UK channels you can receive is something we are always being asked. Terms such as free UK television in Spain, Freeview and Freesat are always cropping up so we shall explain it to you.

Many people, including satellite installers in Spain, get confused about Freeview and Freesat. If satellite TV installers are unable to get their terminology correct, then no wonder British expats on the Costa's in Spain are getting more and more confused about how to receive UK TV in Spain.

As British expats move to the warm coastal areas of southern Spain in the Mediterranean, they find it frustrating that they are not able to watch the UK television programmes such as BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5, or the other 100plus other UK TV channels, including Sports, movies and news, that are available to view for free. Although they try to watch local Spanish television channels, some feel the quality of programmes on Spanish TV is not that good as UK TV, they do not show many popular UK TV programmes like Coronation Street or Eastenders, and not all programmes are available in English, (although the switch to Digital Terrestrial Television - TDT - has meant a lot more UK and USA imported programmes are available in English.)

Receiving Freeview in Spain

Freeview is a free digital TV package that is available to people living in the UK. It is not, like many people say, available outside the UK especially Spain. You cannot receive Freeview in Spain. Freeview is a UK only digital television system that is transmitted from the land based television transmitter masts, like Emley Moor and Crystal Palace. The signals from these terrestrial transmitters are not strong enough to reach Spain.

Many UK TV channels are available on "free to air" satellite systems. British expats around Europe can watch their favourite UK TV channels for free via free to air satellite in Spain. Free to air means that there is no monthly subscription to pay, unlike the pay TV channels offered on satellite packages offered by Sky TV.

Receiving Freesat in Spain

Freesat is the name of a brand of satellite receivers designed to receive these free to air UK satellite television channels. You can also use a Sky digibox or any other digital satellite receiver to receive the free to air signals. A Sky digibox without a viewing card will still be able to receive BBC and ITV channels, and all the channels a Freesat receiver can receive.

You can receive many of the UK free to air TV channels by installing a small satellite dish and a digital satellite set top box. However, due to the frequencies used, the main UK TV channels such as BBC and ITV may not be available on these small satellite dishes, and therefore much larger satellite dishes will be required, from 1.8m to 2.4m.

It is worth noting that a Sky digibox without a Sky viewing card will receive the same channels as a standard Freesat digibox.

Both Sky digiboxes and Freesat digiboxes use the same satellite frequencies. So if you cannot receive BBC1 on a Sky box withoyour exisitng satellite dish, then you will not be able to receive BBC1 on your Freesat receiver with the same dish!

Spain does have its own version of Freeview, called Television Digital Terrestrial - TDT. Using a TDT set top box, you are able to receive around 30 digital Spanish television channels via your TV aerial on your roof. The digital aspect allows a much clearer picture than the old analogue TV system, and has the option to change the Spanish dubbing soundtrack on UK and USA imported programmes into the original version. It should also be noted that some UK "Freeview" set top boxes do not work in Spain correctly, as they are programmed for the UK TV service and not the TDT service.

So if an installer says that they are able to install a UK Freeview television system for you in Spain, ask them a few questions. As Freeview is a service received by a TV aerial, then why are they installing a satellite dish? Will you able to receive all the UK Freeview channels, like "Dave" and Sky Sports News, for free on their system, as many channels available for free on Freeview are in fact subscription only on satellite. Remember You cannot receive Freeview in Spain!

Getting "no signal" for Teledeporte on Spanish TV in Valencia?

Recent changes to some of the frequencies used for Spanish TV may mean that you are receiving a "NO SIGNAL" message when trying to watch some Spanish digital TV channels.

One of the more popular Spanish TV channels affected is Teledeporte, the free sports channel on TDT.

Basically, some of the TDT channels have changed frequencies.

So all you need to do to get them back is to rescan, normally using the "install" options on your TDT receiver.

This should scan all the available frequencies used for TDT and your channels should then reappear.

This may not be the case for some community systems, where additional "frequency modules" may need to be installed to receive these new frequencies.

There are many ways to get to Valencia.

By car: a number of motorways ensure easy access into the heart of Valencia. The A7 even links Valencia to the French border, whist the A3 links Valencia to Madrid.

By train: Valencias main train station is the Estación del Norte (North Station). It has lines to the south, the north and Madrid. It also have new AVE high speed train lines for quick journeys.

By Air: Valencias Aeropuerto de Manises (Valencia Airport) is located just outside the main city. Tghere are rewgular flights flights to all major cities over Europe as well as regular scheduled services from Spanish centres including Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga.

By sea : several ferry routes operate from Valencia Port. These include routes to Barcelona and the Ibiza islands.

Important changes to TDT "Spanish Freeview" frequencies in the Valencia area

As part of Phase 2 of the digital switch over in Spain, some channels on TDT "Spanish Freeview" have changed their frequencies. This affects TV reception not only in the Valencia area, but across the whole of Spain.

All channels on frequency / multiplex 66 have been moved and transferred over to new frequencies.

This has affected the following Spanish digital TV channels:

Teledeporte
Intereconomía
Veo7 TV

A rescan on your TDT set top box will need to be performed to make sure you can continue to receive these Spanish TV channels.

In some cases a call for a TV engineer / TV installer will be required, as your existing system may not be able to receive Teledeportes new frequency. This is especially true for community TV systems, where individual amplifier modules are installed.

Phase 2 of Spain’s digital switch over is aimed to free up the digital TV frequency spectrum between from 62 to 69. This is so these frequencies can be sold off to other telecoms companies, like mobile phone operators.

It is also worth noting that Teledeporte is now labelled as TDP.

Grand Prix of Europe - Valencia 2011

This years Formula One Grand Prix of Europe, also known as the Valencia F1 Grand Prix 2011 takes place this year on the 24th to 27th June 2011.

It takes place on the Valencia Street Circuit, a a semi-permanent street circuit in Valencia, Spain designed around the marina and port area of Valencia.

The track is 5.419 kilometres (3.367 mi) long and incorporates a total of 25 turns – 11 right-handers and 14 left-handers. It is unique as the track has a bridge crossing across the entrance to the marina. It has been critisised by many due to the lack of overtaking places. In fact in the 2009 race there was NO overtaking at all during the race.

Hopefully the recent rule changes and the Drag Reductions System DRS makes Valencia a bit more exciting for the spectator.

However, if you cannot make it to the race, you can watch it all LIVE on BBC TV in Spain. You can watch the Valencia Grand Prix on the BBC Sports Interactive streams. These can be received on a small 80cm satellite dish in Valencia, and does not require a big 2.4m Portuguese satellite dish to receive UK TV in Valencia.

To access the BBC Sportds service on a Sky box on a small satellite dish in Valencia, Spain, you need to go to the BBC News channel, Sky TV channel 503. Press the RED button, to go to the BBC Interactive TV service. Type in "3001", which is the page number for the BBC Sports service. Once the multiscreen has loaded up you can choose which LIVE sports stream to watch.

Dia del padre (Father’s day) is celebrated on the 19th of March. It falls on St. Joseph’s day. Celebrations for Father’s day depend on the city you’re in and in some parts of Spain, like Valencia, there’s a grand celebration on this day called “Las Fallas.”

Las Fallas is undoubtedly one of the most unique and crazy festivals in Spain. Las Fallas literally means “the fires”. Valencia is busy preparing the festive atmosphere from early in the month with the mascletas, noisy firework displays that take place every day at 2pm in Town Hall Square. Then it is time for the traditional planta of the fallas. People work all night to erect more than 700 statues in the city’s streets and squares. Some even start setting up days before – these huge statues can reach up to 20 metres in height.

You can enjoy these impressive scenes until the crema, when they are set alight amidst a fascinating spectacle of light, music and fireworks. All are burnt except one ninot which, elected by a popular vote, is saved from the flames to form part of the collection at the Fallero Museum.

Another of the most exciting moments of the Fallas is the floral offering to the Virgin Mary. When the Fallas parade starts in honour of the Virgin, there is a mountain of flowers 14 metres high. Open-air celebrations, parades, competitions and other activities complete the festive programme. Valencia, usually a quiet city with a population of half a million, turns into a town of over three million flame-loving revelers during Las Fallas.

If you can get up to Valencia for a few days, or even for the main day, on one of the coach trips, we would definitely recommend it.

Official Moto2 and 125cc training sessions in Cheste

The racing calendar of the Region of Valencia's Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Cheste is burning up the track. Following the official Formula 1 training sessions which took place just a few weeks ago, the time has come for motorcycle racing fans to enjoy the show. Between 10th and 12th February, the official Moto2 and 125cc training sessions are getting underway.

The circuit is named after the fondly remembered 50cc World Champion, since he was the first Valencian to win the world title. Ricardo Tormo died in 1998 having lost his battle against leukaemia.

The Region of Valencia's Ricardo Tormo Circuit has been hosting MotoGP events since it first opened in 1999. For many years, it has been included on the World Championship calendar and its excellent infrastructures and services earned it the trophy for Best Grand Prix, awarded every year by the IRTA, in 2001 and 2006

The Ninot Fallas Exhibition in Valencia

Once again this year, Valencia will be holding its Ninot Exhibition in Nuevo Centro. A selection of the monuments and figures taking part in each Fallas celebration will be included in the Fallas Museum, having been previously selected by the visitors themselves.

They will choose the Ninot indultat through their votes; in other words, they will vote for the monument or figure which will be saved from the flames on 19th March to become part of the Fallas Museum collection, the only museum of its kind, which exhibits all the figures that have been 'pardoned' throughout history. Here, we can see the changes in the materials used to create these monuments - wax, stone, polyester or polystyrene - as well as the different styles.

The Ninot Exhibition has been held in a number of different settings, including the Hall of Columns in the former Exchange, the lower level of the Central Market, and the lower level of Ruzafa Market. The change in location has been motivated by the logistical problem of displaying over 760 figures in the adult and children's categories, which compete every year.

In 2004, the Ninot Exhibition moved to a large marquee in the square known as the Plaza Exterior de Nuevo Centro, built 'ex profeso' to house the exhibition and the over 1,700 square metres it required.

Valencia: an edgy and vibrant expat city

Expat author Jason Webster explains why the ever-changing city of Valencia is the perfect setting for his novels - and for him.

If I’d had a choice about where to come and live in Spain I probably wouldn’t have plumped for Valencia. But that was over 10 years ago, and the city was a very different place then.

Only in recent years has this Mediterranean city - the third largest in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona - emerged from an ugly-duckling image it has suffered for decades. Not without reason did the theatre critic Kenneth Tynan dub it ‘the world capital of anti-tourism’ forty years ago, revelling in the city’s griminess, perverseness and lack of attention to the needs of visitors.

“To be alone in Valencia,” he quoted Lady Harlech as saying at the time, “is to be permanently twenty minutes this side of suicide.”

Punished by Franco for being the capital of the Republic during the Spanish Civil War, and unloved by much of the rest of the country, Valencia was a backwater, a jewel so encrusted with dirt that almost no one could see the treasure that was lying underneath - least of all the Valencians themselves.

But all that has changed. As I write, the very first high-speed trains are arriving in the city from Madrid, bringing passengers in from the capital - over 350 km away - in barely an hour and a half.

Yet this is only the latest in a long string of recent developments that have transformed Valencia into the most exciting city in Spain. Madrid may be the centre of power, and Barcelona a cultural mecca, but Valencia offers the light and vibrancy of a major Mediterranean port, without the stress of an oversized metropolis.

Perhaps the most emblematic symbol of the new Valencia is the City of Arts and Sciences - a vast space-age complex of buildings designed by Valencian wunderkind Santiago Calatrava, one of the most feted architects around. An opera house, a science museum, aquarium and showcase tennis court have all been constructed, attracting visitors from all over the world, and are frequently used as the backdrop in adverts for new sports cars.

The attractions of the older part of the city have also been given some much-needed attention. When I first arrived, chunks of the Moorish city walls and wonderful 19th century town houses were close to falling down. Valencia felt neglected and down-at-heel. Now, however, a great number of these buildings have been restored and painted, their facades shining bright pinks, reds and blues.

For this is a city that loves colour, pageantry and show, in all its forms. Fallas, the biggest fiesta of the year here - and one of the most important in the country - heralds the coming of Spring. And Valencians like to mark the changing of the seasons with a concentration of fireworks, "fire-cracker concerts" and bonfires that would pull at the heart-strings of any self-respecting arsonist. Tonne after tonne of gunpowder is ignited in a seemingly endless display of pyrotechnics, both during the day and at night. While on the last day of the festivities, eight-metre-high statues of wood and papier-mâché, standing at almost every crossroads, are set ablaze, often scorching nearby buildings - and anyone foolish enough to stand too close.

There’s more to the city than a strong pyromaniac tendency, though. Valencia is the home of Spain’s national dish - paella. Here, the real thing is made with chicken and rabbit, not seafood - although there are fish and shellfish versions. But with the sea close by, and surrounded by a belt of fertile market gardens growing everything from oranges and artichokes to spinach and olives, this is an ideal place to test for oneself the health-giving benefits of the famous "Mediterranean diet".

Yet despite all this abundance and renewal, all is not rosy in Valencia. There is a dark side to the city, one that rarely comes to light or is seen by the visitor or recently arrived expat. Which was one of the reasons why I decided to write a series of detective novels set here. Having set down my roots over ten years before, I wanted to describe the place that had become my home, but to do so in a way that expressed the nuances, the shadows and tones of grey as well as all the colour and the attractions. Today no one could insist that this is a capital of "anti-tourism", but the dirty, edgy city that Tynan saw hasn’t gone away, not entirely.

Accusations of corruption in the city’s politics are so common now they barely warrant front-page attention. All that money that was used to help revamp the place was also used to line a few pockets, it would appear.

Then some of the decisions made in the name of progress have been very controversial. The Cabanyal is an old fishermen’s quarter north of the port area, running parallel to the beach. Here tightly packed houses from the turn of the century display facades of delicate ceramic work, with blue, green and turquoise zig-zag patterns or checker-board effects, with decorations showing sea creatures or the faces of water spirits. The area has been described by more than one visitor as an "open-air museum", a showcase of Art Nouveau design. Yet the Town Hall wants to bulldoze a great hole through the neighbourhood to extend a modern avenue through to the seafront. Local people have staged protests, and there have been clashes with the police, but the plans continue.

And of course, as with almost any modern city, Valencia has its own fair share of problems with drugs and the sex trade. In fact, the city had an official red-light district as far back as the Middle Ages. And as you drive along the local roads today you will often find a lonely building somewhere, the word "club" in fluorescent lights over the door. Don’t be fooled: this is not the local equivalent of White’s or the Atheneum, but a brothel.

Despite its faults, though, I have developed a deep attachment to Valencia. I came originally because I had fallen in love with a Valencian woman; today she is my wife. And although, in that sense, the choice of where I was to come and live in Spain was made for me, I now know I would have it no other way. Valencia is, and will continue to be, a great Spanish city. And there is more than enough material here for many more crime novels to come.

FOR the last decade, Valencia, best known as the birthplace of paella, has been steadily inching onto the radar of savvy travelers. Since 2005 — when work was completed on Santiago Calatrava’s futuristic museum complex, the City of Arts and Sciences — and 2007, when Spain’s third-largest city played host to the America’s Cup, Valencia’s Moorish-accented neighborhoods have been filling up with boutiques, restaurants and night spots. Last month, a new train line on the AVE, Spain’s high-speed rail service, linked the city to Madrid, about 200 miles away, making it even easier for travelers to visit this seaside city, which is cooking up a lot more than rice.

1) SHOP THE CARMEN

In hilly Barrio del Carmen, the oldest part of the city and its creative center, bearded students and elegant urbanites trek over graffitied passageways where cafes and galleries spill onto medieval squares. The sprawling Mercado Central (mercadocentralvalencia.es) has recently become a high-fashion party locale, hosting shindigs for Prada and Aston Martin, among others. Stylish boutiques are tucked behind the 15th-century late Gothic Lonja de la Seda silk exchange. Two of the best, Bugalú (Calle de la Lonja 6; 34-963-918-449) and Madame Bugalú y Su Caniche Asesino (Danzas 3; 34-963-154-476; madamebugalu.es), carry clothing and accessories by Spanish, French and Swiss designers, as well as international labels like Paul Frank.

2) VALENCIAN ORIGINAL

Valencia is the birthplace of horchata, a drink made from the juice of chufas, or tiger nuts, and said to date from the city’s Islamic period, the 8th to 13th centuries. You can sample it at the Horchatería El Siglo (Plaza de Santa Catalina 11; 34-963-918-466) in the Carmen. Pair a glass (2.20 euros) with a café cortado (1.30 euros) and another Valencian original: the farton (.50 euros), a fluffy pastry finger dusted in powdered sugar.

3) TAPAS, DECONSTRUCTED

Valencia’s once-middling restaurant scene is seeing the emergence of creative young talent. Carosel (Taula de Canvis 6; 34-961-132-873; restaurante-carosel.blogspot.com), a chic but unpretentious restaurant that opened in the Carmen in March, has become a standout. The Valencian chef Jordi Morera serves up delectable twists on traditional cuisine, like a mini cuttlefish stew with artichokes and almonds. The prix fixe menu changes weekly and is always a bargain at 22 euros.

4) CARMEN CAROUSING

In the Carmen, late-night action converges on the Plaza del Tossal. Locals avoid the splashy tourist traps and pour into the Stone Age-themed Bar los Picapiedra (Caballeros 25; bar-lospicapiedra.com), where students, bohemians and miscellaneous walk-ins guzzle cider out of large, spouted glass porrones, which look vaguely like watering cans (7 euros), and listen to Spanish alt-rock.

5) FUTURE CITY

Last summer, Valencia adopted Valenbisi (valenbisi.es; 10 euros a week), a public bicycle rental system. Pick up a bike near the Torres de Serranos, one of the gates to the city, and cycle under a series of bridges through the palm-filled Jardín del Turia to the City of Arts and Sciences (Avenida Autopista del Saler; 34-902-100-031; cac.es). The buildings’ curved, billowing facades resemble everything from the skeleton of a whale to the upper half of a giant eye completed by its mirror image in a reflecting pool. Farther south , at L’Oceanogràfico marine complex, you can wander through underground tunnels as sharks float overhead. Entrance is 24.50 euros; a three-day pass to the entire City of Arts and Sciences is 32.40 euros.

6) AN ALTERNATIVE HUB

Built largely in the 1920s, the neighborhood of Rusaffa became a center for the city’s Muslim immigrant community in the second half of the 20th century. This influence still dominates, with Middle Eastern and East Asian markets and cafes dotting the streets. But as the Carmen has become increasingly touristy, Rusaffa has also become an alternative hub for artists and students. A combination bookshop, bar, performance space, publishing house and gallery, Slaughterhouse Books (Denia 22; 34-963-287-755; slaughterhouse.es) used to be a butchery and still has the meat hooks to prove it. Gnomo (Denia 12; 34-963-737-267; elblogdegnomo.blogspot.com), a design boutique, carries things like ceiling lamps made from recycled cola bottles and oil and vinegar pourers shaped like beakers.

7) TAPAS, FAMILY STYLE

Maipi (Maestro José Serrano 1; 34-963-735-709), a small tapas restaurant in Rusaffa, fills up in the early afternoon with businessmen who spend their siestas trading barbs at the bar and sampling dishes like fresh artichoke and morcilla sausage wrapped in a thin dough or grilled cod fish in lemon and olive oil, beneath a backdrop of country-kitsch décor and soccer paraphernalia. Lunch for two costs around 40 euros.

5 p.m.
8) RUINS UNDER GLASS

One of the best spots for exploring Valencia’s history is at the museum L’Almoina (Plaza de Décimo Junio Bruto; 34-962-084-173; valencia.es/almoina), which opened three years ago in the Carmen on the site where Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 B.C. Visitors walk over glass floors, looking down at a stunning assemblage of ruins excavated in the area. The exhibition includes Roman baths, Visigoth tombs and a medieval Moorish ward for plague victims. Free on weekends and 2 euros during the week.

9 p.m.
9) MOORISH COURSES

The city’s Islamic past is the focus of Balansiya (Paseo de las Facultades 3; 34-963-890-824; balansiya.com), an out-of-the-way restaurant that authentically recreates the culinary experience of medieval Moorish Valencia. The décor is exquisite Arab-Andalusian, and the prix fixe dinner menus include tabbouleh, tagine and couscous plus lesser-known Moorish specialties like assaffa (Andalusian pasta with chicken, cinnamon and nuts), waraka inab (grape leaves stuffed with cereal in an almond-mint vinaigrette) and xarab Andalusi (a drink made of fruits, flowers, spices and herbs). Dinner is 20 to 30 euros.

10) PARTY UNDER THE MUSEUM

Club life doesn’t kick off until after 1 a.m., so hit Café Negrito (Plaza Negrito 1; 34-963-91-4233) for an after-dinner drink. Later, witness Valencian late-night decadence at MYA (Avenida del Saler 5, City of Arts and Sciences; 34-963-319-745; umbracleterraza.com), a domed club underneath a landscaped walkway leading to the Principe Filipe Science Museum. It’s Studio 54 meets imperial Spain meets Jersey Shore. Entry and your first cocktail, 15 euros.

11) SHOP THE LOT

Every Sunday, Valencia’s antiques and junk shop owners convene at the Plaza de Luis Casanova, a giant lot tucked behind the 55,000-seat Camp de Mestalla stadium, the home field of Valencia Club de Fútbol, to sell their goods at huge markdowns to a fantastically eclectic cross-section of locals.

12) PAELLA EN LA PLAYA

The shore is lined with large restaurants that have made paella their specialty. La Pepica (Paseo de Neptuno 6; 34-963-710-366; lapepica.com) is the best known (for good reason), but a few doors down is an even better choice, L’Estimat (Paseo de Neptuno 16; 34-963-711-018; restaurantelestimat.com). On Sunday afternoons, the place fills up with the after-church crowd chowing down on paella Valenciana (made with chicken and rabbit). Lunch for two costs around 70 euros.

13) WALK THE CABANYAL

There is a controversial initiative to bulldoze many of the gorgeous but decrepit turn-of-the-century buildings in the seaside neighborhood of Cabanyal, the former fishermen’s quarter, to link the city with the coastline and “regenerate” a district known for crime, vagrancy and prostitution. Before it’s too late, stroll past the colorfully tiled maritime murals and weathered but elegant Art Nouveau town houses. One can’t help but hope to some day come back and find it utterly unchanged.

The new AVE high-speed line travels between Madrid and Valencia in about 90 minutes, a marked improvement from the previous travel time of just under four hours. Round-trip tickets start at 96 euros, about $125 (renfe.com).

The Hospes Palau de la Mar (Navarro Reverter 14; 34-963-162-884; hospes.es), a design hotel built in adjoining 19th-century mansions, melds grand arches, detailed woodwork and marble staircases with 66 minimalist-chic rooms in hues of white and chestnut, replete with Egyptian cotton sheets and plasma televisions. Doubles start at 115 euro when booked 15 days in advance.

Petit Palace Germanias (Sueca 14; 34-963-513-638; petitpalacehotelgermanias.com), also in a 19th-century residence, is a comfortable 41-room boutique hotel in up-and-coming Russafa; from 65 euros.

Formula One Winter Testing in Valenica

The Valencia test will be at the Cheste Circuit, Valencia Spain.

There is no guarantee what teams will be running on the days or locations. But with Valencia being the first offical test day, expect a number of teams to be there testing and launching thir cars around the date of the first test.

For example Force India’s 2011 F1 car will make its first appearance in the second test of the year at Jerez. The VJM03 will remain in service for the first test 2011 at Valencia.

Mercedes GP will launch their 2011 car in the Valencia pit lane ahead of the first multi-team test of the year. The MGP W02 will be unveiled in front of the team’s garage on the morning of February 1 at the Spanish circuit, before it's given its on-track debut later in the day. Mercedes GP’s driver line-up for the 2011 season, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, will be on hand to meet the media at the launch.

Sauber and Renault will also be launching their new cars in Valencia on January 31, whilst Toro Rosso will reveal their 2011 car a day later.

High Speed train cuts the time between Valencia and Madrid

Spain hurtled past France as Europe's high speed rail leader last month when it opened a 6.6-billion-euro line from Madrid to Valencia, banking on a boost to the economy.

The 438-kilometre route, which opened on December 19, slashes travel time between the Spanish capital and the Mediterranean port of Valencia, Spain's third-biggest city, from four hours to just 90 minutes.

The project, built at a cost of 6.6 billion euros ($A8.6 billion), brings Spain's high-speed rail network to 2056 kilometres.

Advertisement: Story continues below It places Spain ahead of the 1896 kilometres of high speed rail in France and 1285 kilometres in Germany, home to Siemens, the world's largest manufacturer of high-speed trains.

Spain's high-speed train service, known as Alta Velocidad Espanola (AVE), boasts trains with noses shaped like a duck-billed platypus moving at speeds of up to 300 kph.

El Vergel Safari Park closes after 33 years

FALLING NUMBERS of visitors and competition from more modern attractions have forced the closure of El Vergel Safari Park after 33 years.
A trickle of cars arrived last Friday only to find gates were closed and be turned away from the once-popular attraction by security staff.
One told RTN: “We are closed – everything is closed.”

However, he confirmed keepers would be caring for some 460 animals over the next six months as they undergo health checks and found new homes under strict guideline covering their movement.

The closure is a blow for locals who worked with animals or in the restaurant and bar.
A once ground-breaking attraction on the Marina Alta, it allowed visitors to watch animals wandering ‘semi-wild’ in enclosures and boasted 1,400 animals of some 150 different species.
The park covered half a million square metres close to Pego Marshes and also had an important collection of over 150 types of fauna.

However, the number of tourists passing through the gates has tumbled from a golden age of 250,000 a year to fewer than 15,000.
It is understood the safari park failed to keep pace with new attractions such as Terra Natura in Benidorm and Valencia’s L’Oceanografic and Bioparc.
El Vergel allowed visitors to drive through the enclosures housing a menagerie of Bengal tigers, lions, water buffalo, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceros, and 25 Vietnamese pigs. Other attractions included a sea lion show and a large aviary.
The park also made news by taking part in breeding programmes for wild animals.

However, El Vergel made international headlines for the wrong reasons in May 1999. Disregarding all warning notices, an elderly German couple got out of their car and were killed by three tigers.

A perfunctory “ Hereby we inform (you) of the indefinite closure of our facilities .Without further ado, Greetings” was the poignant and solitary message posted on Vergel Safari Parks website last Wednesday September 9, informing the world that after thirty three years the Park was to close its doors for the very last time.

The recession and competition from other tourist attractions such as Terra Natura in Benidorm and Valencia’s Bioparc had all conspired to bring about the demise of one of the Costa Blanca favourite leisure destinations.

Vergel Safari Park had been a pioneer on the Costa Blanca of the then new concept of housing animals in an environment close to their natural habitat as possible, and away from the more confined zoo concept. However, times move on and the newer facilities of the competitors and ever changing mores of the leisure industry, left behind the park struggling to keep up its visitor numbers which had plummeted a massive 80% over the last three years.

The Park occupied some half a million square metres of land next to the Pego marsh, and was home to around one thousand four hundred animals covering one hundred and fifty species. Half of the Parks fifty employees have been made redundant with immediate effect, whilst the remaining staff are being kept on to continue caring for the animals over a six month period during which it is hoped they can all be successfully found new homes.

The economic knock on effect to the Marina Alta area will be felt through the direct unemployment of the workers, and indirectly a drop in trade for the ancillary businesses that benefitted from the tourist influx into the area to visit the Park.

In the long run perhaps the one thing the Park will be remembered for is the incident in 1999, when two German pensioners were killed by a tiger when they unwittingly left their vehicle, thinking they had left the secure area, when in fact they had merely passed from the lion’s enclosure through to that of the tigers.

FIA unveils 20-race 2011 F1 schedule

The FIA's World Motor Sport Council has released the provisional race calendar for the 2011 Formula 1 season, which sees Interlagos regain the season finale for the first time since 2008.

The enlarged 20-race calendar - the longest in F1 history - features an earlier start and later finish than the 2010 season, with the championship-closing Brazilian Grand Prix on 27 November. .

There are once again four back-to-back races - Malaysia and China, Spain and Monaco, Germany and Hungary, and Japan and Korea.

The new Indian Grand Prix at Delhi comes towards the end of the season as part of a series of flyaway races.

The European Geand Prix, held in Valencia, will be over the weekend of the 6th June 2011

More than 600 people were Tuesday combating three wildfires which forced the evacuation of eight areas in eastern Spain, officials said.

Most of the evacuations were in Valencia province. They were taken as a precaution, the sources said, without giving the number of those who had to leave their homes.

Firefighters were concentrating their efforts in the community of Ontinyent, where about 1,200 people had been evacuated, the daily El Pais said on its website.

Smoke blocked several roads, and rail traffic suffered temporary disruptions. Officials did not exclude the possibility that the fires had been started by arsonists.

Star Trek Exhibition at the City of Arts and Sciences

The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia on the Cosat Azahar is having a special summer event this year. They want to take us on a journey through time from the Jurassic Age to the 23rd Century and the “Star Ship Enterprise”.

There are to be two displays one about dinosaurs,”Among Dinosaurs” and the other “Star Trek:An Exhibition”.All of this will take place at the Science Museum from July 14.

Star Trek Exhibit In Spain – El Espacio: La Ultima Frontera

For the first time in Europe, the City of Arts and Sciences of Valencia presents the “Star Trek. Welcome aboard” exhibition, which brings together original pieces from the series and films ‘Star Trek’ presented with an elegant set design capable of teleporting visitors to the starship “Enterprise”. Science and science fiction come together from the 22nd July to the 22nd February 2011 on the third floor of the Science Museum at the City of Arts and Sciences.

The exhibition, which will be open until February 2011, includes an extraordinary selection of some of the most important elements used in the episodes of Star Trek and its films. During the tour visitors can enjoy more than 10 models of starships, including two large ones, more than 20 pieces of the original costumes, the replica of the bridge of the Enterprise, a collection of 15 head of characters and the space shuttle simulator, including graphics and audiovisual.

On July 22nd the ‘Príncipe Felipe’ Science Museum, part of the Ciudades de las Artes Y Las Ciencias in Valencia, Spain, became host to the "Star Trek: Welcome Aboard" exhibition. This marks the first time that Star Trek: The Exhibition has come to Europe

The exhibit includes a replica of The Enterprise D bridge and models of the USS Enterprise and USS Voyager. There are also more models, props and costumes, including costumes from the new Star Trek movie. There are also episode scripts, posters, murals, artwork and Star Trek merchandise.

The “Star Trek” exhibition which will give visitors the chance to see real props and costumes from this legendary series for the first time ever in Europe, in a meticulously assembled set that will beam them up to the star ship ‘Enterprise’

The replica of the bridge, a flight simulator, models and real objects can all be seen in the exhibition on this series that actually did see into the future as it portrayed inventions such as laser rays, CAT scans, the mobile phone and automatic sliding doors. Pedro García Ribot also announced that in the autumn an assembly of Star Trek fans will be held in Valencia.

The Hemisferic will be showing its iMax films and the World of the Oceanografic will be open until midnight for the summer.The Umbracle will be the setting for the “Among Dinosaurs” and it will be available to view until next May.The exhibition recreates the habitats of these creatures.There are 26 robotic dinosaurs and they range in size from 2 metres to 27 metres in length.They make a wide range of movements and sounds.

La Tomatina - Bunol - Tomato Fight Valencia

La Tomatina is the world's biggest organised tomato fight.

Every year, thousands of people gather in the town of Buñol in Valencia to spend an hour pelting each other with rotten tomatoes. The tomato fight has become famous the world over, but is actually just one event in a week of festivities that attracts visitors from around the world. This year, La Tomatina will be held on 25 August at 11am.

Each year, on the last Wednesday of August, thousands of people plunge themselves into the tradition that has lasted for over 60 years. They come to Bunol from all over the world to feel and live throught one of the best, and more unusual fiestsa in Spain: La Tomatina.

It all started on the last Wednesday of August 1945, when some young people were getting fresh air in the town square. The evening did not promise much, so they decided to form part of a parade that was taking place with musicians and carnival figures of giants and enormous headed individuals. The impetus of their entry caused the fall of a participant who full of rage, began to hit everyone in his way. By a quirk of fate, there just happened to be a stand of vegetables beside them. The angry crowd started throwing tomatoes at each other until the public law put an end to the vegetable battle.

The following year, the young people repeated the tomato fight on a voluntary basis and brought tomatoes from home. Although the celebration was dissolved by the police during the following years, the boys, without knowing it, had made history. La Tomatina was banned in the early fifties, although this fact did not dissuade participants, eventhough some were arrested. But the will of the locals was heard and the celebration returned, more people took part in it and it became increasingly wild.

Again the event was canceled until 1955, when, in protest, the Burial of the Tomato was held: an event in which residents carried a coffin with a big tomato inside. The parade was accompanied by a music band playing funeral marches, and it obtained a complete success. Finally, in 1957 official permision was granted and La Tomatina festival was formaly established. After that it has been the City Councils of the municipality themselves that have organized and promoted this curious battle, that has made Buñol world famous.

The festival became popular in the rest of Spain thanks to Javier Basilio who, showed the event in a television program Informe Semanal “Week report” on Spanish TV. Since 1980, it has been the different City Councils that have supplied the tomatoes to the participants, which year after year, increase in number and enthusiasm. The success has led to have La Tomatina, of Buñol, be considered, as of August 2002, International Fiesta of Tourist Interest by the General Secretariat of Tourism of Spain.

At La Tomatina you can always have fun, but if you want it to be memorable, follow the tips we give you:

Choose running shoes you don’t have mush esteem for, and tie them to your ancles. Other types of shoes can be easily lost

Wear old clothes you don’t intend to use again, they will most likely end up broken.

Diving goggles are quite convenient. The acid contained in the tomatoes can sting your eyes a lot, but leaves your skin clean and soft.

If you want to take pictures, use a waterproof camera.

If you want to see better, never go up railings, windows, pillars, etc., you will become a perfect target for all the tomatoes

If you're an outsider and you want to spend the night in Buñol, make sure you look for accommodation in advance.

Do not miss the soap stick: a soap smeared pole with a ham hanging on the top. Whoever gets to the ham, keeps it.

And, of course, enjoy the most of it. It’s marvellous to do something as absurd as throwing tomatoes to everyone for an hour.

THE NEW managers of Terra Mítica theme park, Aqualandia-Mundomar, announced this week that the park would be finishing its summer season at the end of September rather than in December and that at least 400 members of staff would be made redundant.

It is believed that the park will close for at least 6 months, with around 400 staff losing their jobs.

A spokesman for the new management team said that it was necessary to close the facility for at least six months so that wide ranging reforms can be carried out.

Those facing the sack also include all of the top managers as well as the current director, Juan José Torres.

The Calendar & Schedules section on the Terra Mitica website does not yet reflect these reported changes to operations.

The official reason provided to workers to advance in late September the closure of the facility, which was originally scheduled for December, is the need to implement a comprehensive reform of Terra Mitica, forcing to close the entire park for at least six months. The closure, therefore, lead including a plan for temporary layoffs affect more than four employees, more than 600 are there in the company. Various sources that had access to this newspaper yesterday reported that although the meeting was provided little information or a list of workers affected by redundancy case, everything points to the same company contemplate the one hand to advance the end of the contract to more than 300 permanent-intermittent and, secondly, to include about 120 permanent workers, within which would also temporarily suspended all contract positions in the complex, including its own director general, Juan Jose Torres. La Vuelta a Espana 2010

La Vuelta a España, the Tour of Spain cycling road race, is used to being regarded as the little brother of the three Grand Tours of Europe, lacking some of the history and tradition of the tours of France and Italy.

In 2010, the Vuelta a España will be celebrating its 75h Anniversary.

The Mayor for Orihuela, Monica Lorente, announced this week that the prestigious bike race will be going through the city and surrounding municipalities, including Rojales and Benijofar, when the Vega Baja stage of the event takes place on Friday 3rd September.

Ms Lorente told a press conference at the Orihuela Town Hall that she is honoured the city is to play host to one of Spain’s biggest annual sporting events and announced a series of projects in the city, such as road surface improvements, to prepare for the big event. She said: “This sporting event is one of the most important of the year and is a great way to promote the city of Orihuela.”

The city will be the main base for the seventh stage of the bicycle tour and will welcome cyclists from all over the World. It is the second time that Orihuela has been involved in the Tour of Spain but Ms Lorente says that this year it is even more symbolic as 2010 is also the centenary of the birth of Orihuela born poet Miguel Hernández.

The Town Hall has made an enormous effort to get the cycling tour organisers to include Orihuela as one of its stage cities. Ms Lorente said: “The organisation that goes into staging this event is enormous and many hours of dedicated work has taken place behind the scenes in order to have this prestigious event in our city.”

The Mayor also announced that the 3rd September will be officially classed as a fiesta day for the residents of Orihuela City as it is important that they can personally witness one of the most important sporting events, not only on a national level but internationally.

More than 14 municipalities in the Vega Baja will see cyclists from the tour go through, including Jacarilla, Benejúzar, Algorfa, Benijófar, Rojales, Formentera, Almoradí, Dolores, Catral, Redován, Albatera, Guardamar, Cox and Granja de Rocamora.

The Gandia International Music Festival - August 2010

The town of Gandía, in Valencia, is laying on a wide range of cultural events to mark the anniversary of the first saint to come from one of the most important families in Valencia’s history, the patron saint of the city, and Chief Minister of Emperor Charles V of Spain.

Visitors can enjoy a whole host of activities all year round on the occasion of this important event. Highlights of the musical programme include “Polisònic: Gandía International Music Festival”, a concert by the Orfeó Borja choir, the concert entitled Visitatio Sepulchri en Jazz by the Big Band Centenari and “La Mar de Músiques” (sea of music) festival. Street theatre, art and philatelic exhibitions, gastronomic events and a literary week are just a few of the options on offer in this programme.

THE POLISÒNIC (Gandia’s International Music Festival), is one of the most important cultural events in the city of Gandia and one of the most prestigious music festivals throughout the Valencian Community.

Vuelta a España 2010

In 2010, the Vuelta a España will be celebrating its 75h Anniversary.

Over these past 75 years, the world and cycling have changed a great deal. That first edition held 75 years ago had 14 stages, almost all of which were over 250 kms long. What is to be the 75th “Platinum” edition will have 21 stages averaging 170 kms. A considerable difference aimed at being a spectacular event with shorter stages and fast-paced dashes to the finish line.

And the show will be getting off to a start in Seville, against the backdrop of the La Maestranza Bullring. On August 28th, a Vuelta as none ever before will be getting under way. A night-time team time trial through Seville’s most emblematic areas will be welcoming racers, sponsors, technical personnel and numerous spectators gathering to once again follow this excitingly vibrant events of three-week Spanish race.

Six summit finishes, two of which are newcomers to La Vuelta, will be crowding fans along the shoulders of the roads to greet the passing peloton. Xorret del Catí, where Alejandro Valverde earned himself the yellow jersey last year, Andorra’s Pal Pass, Peña Cabarga, which will be on the course for the second time, and Lagos de Covadonga will all be providing the enjoyment of great finishes just as in the past. The new finishing points in Cotobello in Asturias and the “Bola del Mundo” in Madrid, will be joining in with these icons to make the history of La Vuelta a España even greater yet.

Other heart-stopping finishes will be at the finish in Malaga with its Gibralfaro Castle, in Murcia with the Cresta del Gallo a few short kilometers from the finish line, Vilanova i la Geltrú in Catalunya with the new Rat Penat climb. All of these finishes, in conjunction with the 46-kilometer time trial in the homeland of the Ribera del Duero wineries will be shaping a Vuelta which – if last year’s edition amazed us – promises not to leave anyone indifferent.

The 75th Anniversary Edition of La Vuelta a España will be reminding us of our past, will be showing us a course heretofore unseen for the most part and will be giving rise to the wonderful days of racing that we still as yet have to enjoy decked out in red.

We leave Murcia, a locality with a great deal of experience in La Vuelta, for Orihuela, hosting the stage finish for the first time in La Vuelta. The Orihuela stage will comprise part of the many events which will be held in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Miguel Hernández. The first week of the race winds up with a day which would theoretically seem well-suited to sprinters, as it has only one cat 3 climb at km. 112, known as the “Alto de Hondón de los Frailes.

This stage starts in Murcia, and ends in Orihuela, via Jacarilla, Algorfa, Rojales, Catral, Albatera, Hondon de las Neives, Aspes, Crevillente.

We arrive at the mountain in Alicante where Alejandro Valverde took the lead to then finally win the race. Travelling from newcomer Villena to Xorret del Catí on La Vuelta’s fifth visit to this summit finish line. The last four were a magnificent spectacle on the part of the racers. Five mountain passes mark the course leading up to the final climb: A cat 3, the Onil Pass, which made a name for itself in 2009, and three cat 2 climbs, the famous Tudons, Carrasqueta and Torremanzanas Passes.

A leg-breaking stage with a grueling course assuring a spectacular day, and goes through Biar, Onil, Alcoy, Concentaina, Benilloba.

Sunday September 5th

Second stage of this mountain duo in the Autonomous Community of Valencia, totaling 187 kilometers with six mountain passes: two cat 3 and four cat 2 climbs. All well-known in the peloton, guaranteeing a real event in the stage with the most mountain passes in the entire 2010 Vuelta.

Calpe, which had not hosted a stage start since 1973, will be doing so this time with all eyes on the stage ending in Alcoy that may be reconfirming the changes that Corret del Catí leaves us in the general classification.

This stage starts in Calpe, and ends in Alcoy, via Moraira, Benitachelle, Javea, Denia, Ondara, Pedreguer, Llosa de Camarcho, Alcalali.

The centre has plenty of shops and also a cinema which also shows films in their original language - i.e. mainly English. This is done by the use of headphones, you have to make a 20 euro refundable deposit for the hire of the headphones, and some people has reported that you leave a document like your driving license or Residencia as security.

Portal De La Marina is in a prime location as far as communication is concerned. The centre enjoys direct accesses from all the roadways surrounding it, making for an uncomplicated and straight drive to arrive at the complex. TDT Industry receives complaints about the reception of TDT

Since the analogue TV 'off' on 30 March, the Ministry of Industry has received over 1,760 inquiries from people related issues reception of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT / TDT) until 20 April.

In total, during this period of time, Industry received 86 985 calls, of which 47 739 were treated by agents. Of that number, 88.1% were questions about the process and technology, 8.2% of calls were associated with receiving TDT signals and 3.7% of signal problems.

Most calls (42 052) had to do with questions about general issues, while the rest were from people who are unable to see TDT correctly on TV because they lacked a proper decoder or, if they had, do not know how to use it or the antenna of their building was not ready for DTT (3914) or that had trouble receiving the signal (1760).

According to the latest figures provided by industry in March, at 98.24% of the population to reach the coverage of DTT. However, in the month that has elapsed, incidents have been detected in some relays that still prevent some people living in areas able to watch TV coverage.

Fallas 2010 - Gandia

Went to Gandia to look at the Fallas yesterday and to watch the parade. As usual chaos, lots of people, paths blocked, roads closed....

And on of the Fallas had a "Cut away" section so you could see the inside and the wood and polystyrene blocks the use to build it up...and this one also had photos documenting the design and construction of the Fallas....

Didnt stay for the crema....but certainly heard it!

Well, justs spent a (LONG!) day in Valencia - at Fallas......

Train from Gandia to Valencia was very crowded, lucky we opted to go from Gandia and not do the usual of pick the train up at Xeraco! By the timethe train was at Valencia Nord, "Sardines" sprang to mind....

Anyway, here some what we saw:

Ayuntamiento Fallas - unusually it did not win 1st!!! One just beside the train station did!

The aftermath of todays Mascletà - we were in a different location that we normally are, and the "bangs" did not sound as loud as they normally do...will have to change that for next year!

The the parade starts, nice to watch, but bloody annyong as you cannot cross the roads / procession, and if you can only at certain points, and of course the procession has priority....you do get "comfy" with new friends in the crush!

And toward the end of the procession, the flowers built up into the display

And the costumes are stunning, and everyone tales part (Cue - ahh cute!)

Also had a very nice lunch at a small place we found - its very close the the townhall square...called the Ginger loft - [url]www.thegingerloft.com[/url] - first time i have had hummus, but only seats 45 people, it is cosy, and good atmosphere, and their cheesecake is to die for (and the chokkie cake look damn good also!)

Fallas 2010

One of my most favourite time in Spain is Fallas time.

Just the whole fiesta always has me amazed, and how relaxed everyone can be when they close down main roads in town for a week or more to build a Fallas, have a party, throw fireworks and banger at each other, the Fallas Queens in their dresses, then burn the lot down in a big fiesta on the 19th March in a big "up yours" to Elf n Safety.

One from 2007 in a small street in Valencia:

Its always an experience going down to Valencia and seeing the 2pm Mascletà. Thousands of people flock to the city centre out side the town hall for the 2pm spectacular. You feel the ground shacking as the "bomb" go off, and you cannot help wondering about how the glass in the buildings around you stays in!

The Mascletà is covered on TV, and they even have a decibel meter level on the screen to show you how loud it can be.

The Fallas can be huge, and have been in preparation for many months, and usually have a humourous side to them, usually at the expense of polititians or world events.....

Then they wait until the firemen arrive. Not to put out the burning fallas, but to spray the nearby buildings with water to stop them from burning whilst the fallas burn away. Sad to see all that time money and effort go to waste, but good when the huge cheers from the crowd happens as the fallas topples over onto itself.

Something you would not see in the UK at all, and was one of the times that I liked to visit Spain before I moved over here.

Fallas 2010 in Gandia

Gandia is the capital of the county of La Safor, between the mountains and the beaches of The Mediterranean. Like its much larger neighbour Valencia, Gandia greets the arrival of springtime with a spectacular pyrotechnic festival known as Las Fallas. Various events and entertainments take place over the period of a few days, culminating in the Feast of Saint Joseph on 19 March. All the hard work put into the creation of giant figures of wood and paper go up in smoke in the great bonfires that take place in the evening as part of the Gandia Fallas celebrations.

The schedule of events for the Fallas 2010 fiesta is now available.

FEBRUARY 28th (Sunday)
At 07.00 a.m. Despertà (awakening sound fireworks) along Paz street toards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square).
At 12.00 p.m. Music Band Parade from the Plaza de la Virgen towards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square) several music bands march playing typical pasodobles. The parade finish approximately at a quarter to 2 p.m. and at that time all the bands will play together the Pasodoble “El Fallero” (the Fallas anthem)
At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square).
At 8.00 p.m. Cridà. La Crida marks the official opening of the Fallas Festival. Crowds of onlookers and all the Fallas Committees gather beneath the Serranos Towers, one of historical Valencia's best-known monuments. After a spectacular inaugural display of light, sound, music and fireworks, the “Fallera Mayor” of Valencia (elected festival queen), surrounded by her Court of Honour and the city authorities, invites everyone to enjoy the imminent fiesta, proclaiming its excellence and virtues.

At 09.30 a .m. From the stage outside the City Hall building, Awards Ceremony for "Fallas" in all participating sections. At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square). At 04.00 p.m. First day of the Flower offering to our Lady of the Forsaken (“Virgen de los Desamparados”) along Paz street and San Vicente street thousands of falleros march towards the Plaza de la Virgen. The flower offering finishes around 1 a .m. in the morning.
At 01.00 a .m. Fireworks on the Paseo de La Alameda (between Exposición Bridge and Las Flores Bridge). MARCH 18th (Thursday)At 11.00 a .m. Homage to the poet Maximilano Thous , at the monument in his honour located at crossroads of Sagunto street and Maximilano Thous street. After finishing, a “Mascletà” will be staged. At 12.00 p.m. Homage to the “Maestro Serrano” , taking place at the monument dedicated to his memory in Reino de Valencia Ave. After finishing, a “Mascletà” will be staged. At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square) At 04.00 p.m. Second day of the Flower offering to our Lady of the Forsaken (“Virgen de los Desamparados”) along Paz street and San Vicente street thousands of falleros march towards the Plaza de la Virgen. The flower offering finishes around 1 a .m. in the morning. At 01.30 a .m. Nit de Foc, the most important fireworks display in The Fallas Festival on the “Paseo de la Alameda” (between Exposición Bridge and Las Flores Bridge) MARCH 19th (Friday) At 11.00 a .m. On the “Puente de San José” (Saint Joseph Bridge), flower offering made by the “Fallas” Queens and their Courts of Honour in front of the statue of the Patriarch. A “Mascletà” will follow.
At 12.00 p.m. Mass in honour of the Patriarch St. Joseph, in the Cathedral Church, staged by the Central Fallas Council and the Carpenters Guild with the attendance of the “Fallas” Queens of Valencia and their Courts of Honour. Mass sung by the "Cathedral Choir" and the orchestra from the Conservatoire José Iturbi from Valencia.
At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square).
At 07.00 p.m. Cabalgata del Fuego (Fire Parade) along Colon Street with a spectacular firework show in Porta de la Mar Square.
At 10.00 p.m. Cremà or burning of the Children's Fallas.
At 10.30 p.m. Cremà or burning of the Children's Fallas having obtained First Prize among the Fallas of the Special Section.
At 11.00 p.m. Cremà or burning of the Children's Falla in the “Plaza del Ayuntamiento” (City Hall Square).

MARCH 20th (Saturday)
At 00.00 a .m. Cremà or burning all the remaining adults Fallas in Valencia.
At 00.30 a .m. Cremà or burning of the adult “Falla” having obtained First Prize among the fallas of the Special Section.
At 01.00 a .m. Bouquet of aerial fireworks in the “Plaza del Ayuntamiento” (City Hall Square) and Cremà or burning of the “Falla” in this square.

These festivities begin with parade through the streeds of Tio de la Porra. The race crowds will get a boost in number for this weekds race as it was announced that the one race ban for Renault has been lifted. This means that Fernando Alonso has been cleared to compete before his countrymen at this weekend's Formula One race in Valencia, Spain.

Ruling body Federation Internationale de l'Automobile overturned a ban on his Renault team for sending his car out from the pit lane with a loose wheel in a race last month. Instead, the ruling body issued Renault with a reprimand and a fine of $50,000.

A few minor track changes have been made to the circuit since the inaugural race last year, with several corners and runoff areas being changed slightly. Hopefully they have also improved the spectacle for the supporters given the amount of poor response as to viewing areas and angels for the 2008 race.
