Ròtova Moros i Cristians: Tradition in Valencia

Each summer, the village of Ròtova, in the Valencia region of Spain, celebrates its spectacular Moros i Cristians festival, known in Spanish as Moros y Cristianos. Although larger celebrations in towns such as Alcoy and Villajoyosa are internationally famous, Ròtova offers a smaller, more intimate festival that showcases the traditions and community spirit of the Valencian countryside.

The annual parade fills the streets with colourful costumes, marching bands, dancers and beautifully decorated floats, creating one of the highlights of the local festival calendar.

A Festival with Centuries of History

Moros i Cristians commemorates the historical conflicts between the Moors and Christians during the Reconquista, when Christian kingdoms gradually reclaimed the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. While inspired by these events, today's celebrations focus on tradition, culture and local identity rather than historical re-enactment.

Each participating group, known as a filà, spends months preparing elaborate costumes, music and performances, making every parade unique.

Located in the La Safor region, just inland from Gandia, Ròtova is a small village surrounded by orange groves and mountains. Despite its size, its Moros i Cristians celebrations are renowned for their welcoming atmosphere and colourful spectacle.

The parade features Moorish and Christian filaes, live marching bands, themed dance groups and impressive floats as they make their way through the village streets. Evening lighting and lively performances add to the atmosphere, making the festival particularly enjoyable for both residents and visitors.

A Celebration of Valencian Culture

Moros i Cristians is much more than a parade. It is a celebration of local heritage, bringing families and communities together while preserving one of the Valencian Community's most cherished traditions.

For visitors exploring the Costa Blanca or Valencia region, Ròtova offers the chance to experience an authentic Spanish festival away from the larger tourist destinations. Its combination of history, music, colourful costumes and community spirit makes it a memorable stop during the summer fiesta season.

Whether you're discovering Moros i Cristians for the first time or have enjoyed Moros y Cristianos festivals elsewhere in Spain, Ròtova's celebration is a wonderful example of why these events remain among the country's most spectacular cultural traditions.
