 If you visit Gandia, Spain, during the summer or early October, you're likely to encounter one of the city's most recognisable characters – the Tio de la Porra. Dressed in a colourful military-style uniform, complete with a large moustache and ceremonial baton, he has become one of the lasting symbols of Gandia's traditions and festivals.

But who is the Tio de la Porra, and why is he so important?

The Symbol of Gandia's Festivals

The Tio de la Porra officially announces the start of the Fira i Festes de Gandia, the city's biggest annual celebration, held each year around the feast day of Saint Francis Borgia (Sant Francesc de Borja), the patron saint of Gandia.

For well over a century, the arrival of the Tio de la Porra has marked the beginning of several days of festivities. Accompanied by a lively marching band and drummers, he parades through the streets bringing music, excitement and the unmistakable feeling that the celebrations have begun.

For local residents, the sound of the drums is one of the most familiar traditions of the year.

A Tradition Dating Back Over 100 Years

The tradition dates back to the late 19th century, when a town crier dressed in military uniform would walk through Gandia announcing the arrival of the annual fair.

Over time, this evolved into the modern-day Tio de la Porra, whose name comes from the ceremonial baton ("porra") he carries during the parade.

Today, the character is represented by a large festival giant (gegant), instantly recognisable with his red and black uniform, oversized moustache and baton.

Oliva Castle Reconquest 2026: Moros y Cristianos Festival Finale

 The Reconquest of the Castle (Reconquista del Castillo) brought the 2026 Moros y Cristianos Festival in Oliva, Valencia to a spectacular conclusion on Sunday evening. After days of colourful parades, music and celebration, thousands of spectators gathered in the town centre to witness the dramatic re-enactment that symbolically ends one of the Costa Blanca's most popular annual festivals.

Unlike the Entrada Cristiana and Entrada Mora, which celebrate the arrival of the Christian and Moorish armies with magnificent processions, the Reconquest recreates the final battle for control of the castle. It is the climax of the festival, combining history, tradition, theatre and the unmistakable thunder of black powder arquebuses in a thrilling spectacle enjoyed by visitors of all ages.

The event begins with the traditional Embassies, where representatives of the Christian and Moorish sides exchange speeches before the battle begins. These historic dialogues symbolise the negotiations between the two armies before the conflict reaches its dramatic conclusion.

Once the formalities are complete, the square is transformed into a battlefield. The competing armies advance towards the castle as clouds of smoke quickly fill the air and the sound of dozens of arquebuses echoes around the town. The powerful explosions, bright muzzle flashes and drifting white smoke create one of the most memorable moments of the entire festival.

The participants use replica muzzle-loading arquebuses, traditional firearms specially manufactured for Moros y Cristianos celebrations. These ceremonial weapons fire black powder charges only and do not fire bullets or projectiles. Despite this, they produce an impressive flash, a loud report and thick smoke, recreating the atmosphere of historical battles while following strict safety regulations.

The Reconquest features all twelve official filaes that take part in the Moros y Cristianos celebrations in Oliva.

The 2026 Moorish Captaincy belonged to Filada Marràqueix, headed by Captain José Mañó Mascarell, accompanied by Ambassador Miquel Mengual Pascual and Ensign Aina Calafat Sanchis.

As the battle unfolds, both armies exchange repeated volleys of arquebus fire while advancing and retreating around the castle. The smoke gradually envelops the square, creating an atmospheric setting that makes the re-enactment even more dramatic. Although inspired by historical events, the performance is above all a celebration of Oliva's heritage and the friendship shared by all the participating filaes.

The Entrada Mora represents the symbolic arrival of the Moorish armies and is one of the most important events of the Moros y Cristianos festivities.
