The Reconquest of the Castle (Reconquista del Castillo) brought the 2026 Moros y Cristianos Festival in Oliva, Valencia to a spectacular conclusion on Sunday evening. After days of colourful parades, music and celebration, thousands of spectators gathered in the town centre to witness the dramatic re-enactment that symbolically ends one of the Costa Blanca's most popular annual festivals.
Unlike the Entrada Cristiana and Entrada Mora, which celebrate the arrival of the Christian and Moorish armies with magnificent processions, the Reconquest recreates the final battle for control of the castle. It is the climax of the festival, combining history, tradition, theatre and the unmistakable thunder of black powder arquebuses in a thrilling spectacle enjoyed by visitors of all ages.
The event begins with the traditional Embassies, where representatives of the Christian and Moorish sides exchange speeches before the battle begins. These historic dialogues symbolise the negotiations between the two armies before the conflict reaches its dramatic conclusion.
Once the formalities are complete, the square is transformed into a battlefield. The competing armies advance towards the castle as clouds of smoke quickly fill the air and the sound of dozens of arquebuses echoes around the town. The powerful explosions, bright muzzle flashes and drifting white smoke create one of the most memorable moments of the entire festival.
The participants use replica muzzle-loading arquebuses, traditional firearms specially manufactured for Moros y Cristianos celebrations. These ceremonial weapons fire black powder charges only and do not fire bullets or projectiles. Despite this, they produce an impressive flash, a loud report and thick smoke, recreating the atmosphere of historical battles while following strict safety regulations.
The Reconquest features all twelve official filaes that take part in the Moros y Cristianos celebrations in Oliva.

The 2026 Christian Captaincy was represented by Filada Mosqueters, led by Captain Rosana Llopis Pous, together with Christian Ambassador Andrea García Català and Ensign Josep Ibiza Bogdan.
The 2026 Moorish Captaincy belonged to Filada Marràqueix, headed by Captain José Mañó Mascarell, accompanied by Ambassador Miquel Mengual Pascual and Ensign Aina Calafat Sanchis.
As the battle unfolds, both armies exchange repeated volleys of arquebus fire while advancing and retreating around the castle. The smoke gradually envelops the square, creating an atmospheric setting that makes the re-enactment even more dramatic. Although inspired by historical events, the performance is above all a celebration of Oliva's heritage and the friendship shared by all the participating filaes.

Following the final exchange of fire, the Christian forces symbolically recapture the castle, bringing the conflict to its traditional conclusion and officially closing another successful edition of the Moros y Cristianos Festival. The applause from the thousands of spectators recognises not only the spectacular performance but also the months of preparation undertaken by every filada, musician and volunteer who makes the event possible.
