Fallas 2013 - Valencia - Programme of Events
FALLAS 2013 - PROGRAMME OF EVENTS
FEBRUARY 24th (Sunday)
At 07.30 a.m. Despertà (awakening sound fireworks) along Paz street to the Plaza del
Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square).
At 12.30 p.m. Music Band Parade from the Plaza de la Virgen towards the Plaza del
Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square) several music bands march playing typical
pasodobles. The parade finish approximately at a quarter to 2 p.m. and at that time all
the bands will play together the Pasodoble “El Fallero” (the Fallas anthem)
At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall
Square).
At 8.00 p.m. Cridà. La Crida marks the official opening of the Fallas Festival. Crowds
of viewers and all the Fallas Committees gather beneath the Serranos Towers, one of
historical Valencia's best-known monuments. After a spectacular inaugural display of
light, sound, music and fireworks, the "Fallera Mayor" of Valencia (elected festival
queen), surrounded by her Court of Honour and the city authorities, invites everyone to
enjoy the imminent fiesta.

memorial monument in Reino de Valencia Avenue.
At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall
Square)
At 03.30 p.m. Second day of the OFRENDA (Flower offering) to the “Virgen de los
Desamparados” along Paz street and San Vicente street thousands of falleros march
towards the Plaza de la Virgen. The flower offering finishes around 1 a.m. in the
morning.
At 01.30 a.m. Nit de Foc, the most important fireworks display in The Fallas Festival

At 11.00 a .m. On the “Puente de San José” (Saint Joseph Bridge), flower offering
made by the Fallas Queens and their Courts of Honour in front of the statue of the
Patriarch.
At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall
Square).
At 07.00 p.m. Cabalgata del Fuego (Fire Parade) along Colon Street with a
spectacular firework show in Porta de la Mar Square.
At 10.00 p.m. Cremà or burning of the Children's Fallas.
At 10.30 p.m. Cremà or burning of the Children's Falla that was awarded First Prize in
Valencia.
At 11.00 p.m. Cremà or burning of the Official Children's Falla located in the “Plaza del
Ayuntamiento” (City Hall Square).
At 00.00 a.m. Cremà or burning of all the remaining adult Fallas in Valencia.
At 00.30 a.m. Cremà or burning of the adult Falla that was awarded First Prize in
Valencia.
At 01.00 a.m. Cremà or burning of the adult Official “Falla” located in the “Plaza del
Ayuntamiento” (City Hall Square)
Note: please notice that during the Fallas Festival there will be up to 700 streets closed. There
would be crowds all over the city. It is a popular festival for all. It is a walking around festival, so
bring with you the most comfortable shoes you may have and lots of patience. Enjoy Valencia

Fallas 2012 Valencia 15th - 19th March 2012
The idea of Las Fallas de Valencia was first cooked up by the medieval guilds, especially the wood workers who swept up spare pieces of wood, shavings and junk into a huge bonfire on the feast day of their patron saint, St Joseph. As the inter-guild competition heated up, passions flared, so did creativity and bonfires now included bizarre effigies (fallas) of despised rivals. And so began a tradition that evolved into the major tourist attraction of Valencia. In the days of yore, effigies were made of unpopular people or events and strung up across streets and burnt. Today this still happens though the materials used are more sophisticated with these effigies being mounted on floats and platforms which are wheeled in a processions down the city streets.
Celebrations at Las Fallas de Valencia
The five day festival is a carnival of bonfires, fireworks, parades, shows, and other festivities, as it also celebrates the arrival of spring. Every day the day starts at 8 am sharp with a ‘wakeup call or la Desperata as it is called. Bands march down the main streets of the town and firecrackers are burned as peppy music rents the air.
At 2 pm it’s time for the La Mascleta which takes place in the different neighborhoods of the city – this is a run up to the main event of Mascleta held on 19 March at the Plaça de l’Ajuntamen. This is when fire crackers and pyrotechnics rule the roost and competitions are held to choose the brightest best fire! Prizes are also awarded for the most ingenious use of left over materials.
The spectacular event of garlanding Our Lady of the Forsaken takes place on 17 and 18 March at 4 pm when people offer flower garlands to the patron saint.
Every night there are firework displays in the city and the final one on the last night is the most magnificent with firecrackers and fireworks lighting up the skies.
Las Fallas gets under way on March 16, when all competing Fallas have to be completed. Taking in some cases up to a year to plan, design and build, these models are spread all over the city for the festive week. Some encapsulate entire scenes from cartoons and fairytales using sets of dwarf-sized figures called ninots.
The focus turns to religion on the following two days, with a Catholic procession known as La Ofrenda. At this time fallas makers ceremoniously bring flowers to the city’s central Plaza of the Virgin, which are used to decorate an enormous wooden-framed statue of Mary. The procession pageants that trail through the center of the city to the plaza on these days are a colorful and pretty sight, with many groups in period costumes and sassy Latin marching bands.
One feature of Las Fallas you definitely can’t ignore is the fireworks displays that blast all around town for the duration of the festival. Occurring three times daily, the fireworks kick off with an 8am display known as la despertà. At 2pm at the main Plaza del Ayuntamiento there is a gigantic fireworks display called la mascletà that centers around a 120-kilo gunpowder blast. Perhaps the most special of the three is el castillo, the midnight fireworks display that reaches its height on the final night of the festival, dubbed la nit de foc, or “night of fire”.
The climax of Las Fallas is la cremà, the night when each of the models in turn is set alight between 10pm and 1am. This dramatic, unusual display may appear like a harrowing street riot at first, but once you adjust your eyes you can enjoy the festival atmosphere and communal sense of seasonal renewal.

Fallas Museum in Gandia
From Friday February 24 until Friday March 9, there will be a free exhibition of this year’s selected puppets at the Fallas Museum in Gandia.
This museum is unique in the world for being the first interactive museum and multimedia the Valencia festival for excellence: ‘The Fallas’.
The Fallas festival in Gandia is celebrated on March 19, but with this museum it is possible for visitors to get to know about the party at other times.
It has been nearly four years since it opened in 2008 and since then this interpretive centre has become a landmark for those who want to learn more about this traditional party in general and its relationship with the city of Gandia in particular.
The Fallas Museum of Gandia is a 4,500 square meter multipurpose building and boasts a large theatre with seating capacity for 572, as well as several meetings rooms, offices a terrace cafe, the museum and parking.
“It was built not only to offer information to the public, but also to serve the demands of companies and institutions and provide technical resources,” said museum manager Pere Cremades.
“The Interpretation Centre is a modern Fallas museum showing visitors the traditions and customs related to the Valencian festival par excellence.
Its history, types of clothing, which are hand-made, add-ons for the grooming of Fallas, its relationship to culture and society, the pyrotechnics, the monuments and the creation process.
It also explains the ‘Casal Faller’ social and local Fallas of the different associations, and finally the music and ‘llibret’ as a sign of satirical literary creativity of them.” This is all explained in an interactive way through multimedia.
“All the texts are written in Spanish, Valencian and English,” said Cremades. “We have visitors of various nationalities and ages including groups of university and school students, tourists, families, pensioner and social groups.”
In addition to the museum, visitors can enjoy other activities. “School groups can complete their visit with craft workshops,” said Cremades.
“There are also frequent exhibitions and once a year we celebrate Favila, the fair of the Fallas festival. We are also creating a workshop for adults.”

The Ninot Fallas Exhibition in Valencia
Once again this year, Valencia will be holding its Ninot Exhibition in Nuevo Centro. A selection of the monuments and figures taking part in each Fallas celebration will be included in the Fallas Museum, having been previously selected by the visitors themselves.
They will choose the Ninot indultat through their votes; in other words, they will vote for the monument or figure which will be saved from the flames on 19th March to become part of the Fallas Museum collection, the only museum of its kind, which exhibits all the figures that have been 'pardoned' throughout history. Here, we can see the changes in the materials used to create these monuments - wax, stone, polyester or polystyrene - as well as the different styles.
The Ninot Exhibition has been held in a number of different settings, including the Hall of Columns in the former Exchange, the lower level of the Central Market, and the lower level of Ruzafa Market. The change in location has been motivated by the logistical problem of displaying over 760 figures in the adult and children's categories, which compete every year.
In 2004, the Ninot Exhibition moved to a large marquee in the square known as the Plaza Exterior de Nuevo Centro, built 'ex profeso' to house the exhibition and the over 1,700 square metres it required.
Now, visitors can judge the exhibits in a large, well-lit space, which gives each piece the room it needs, set against an opaque background, so they can cast their vote based on sound judgement.

Fallas 2010 - Gandia
Went to Gandia to look at the Fallas yesterday and to watch the parade. As usual chaos, lots of people, paths blocked, roads closed....

And on of the Fallas had a "Cut away" section so you could see the inside and the wood and polystyrene blocks the use to build it up...and this one also had photos documenting the design and construction of the Fallas....
Didnt stay for the crema....but certainly heard it!

Valencia Fallas 2010
Well, justs spent a (LONG!) day in Valencia - at Fallas......
Train from Gandia to Valencia was very crowded, lucky we opted to go from Gandia and not do the usual of pick the train up at Xeraco! By the timethe train was at Valencia Nord, "Sardines" sprang to mind....
Anyway, here some what we saw:
Ayuntamiento Fallas - unusually it did not win 1st!!! One just beside the train station did!
The aftermath of todays Mascletà - we were in a different location that we normally are, and the "bangs" did not sound as loud as they normally do...will have to change that for next year!
The the parade starts, nice to watch, but bloody annyong as you cannot cross the roads / procession, and if you can only at certain points, and of course the procession has priority....you do get "comfy" with new friends in the crush!
And toward the end of the procession, the flowers built up into the display
And the costumes are stunning, and everyone tales part (Cue - ahh cute!)
Also had a very nice lunch at a small place we found - its very close the the townhall square...called the Ginger loft - [url]www.thegingerloft.com[/url] - first time i have had hummus, but only seats 45 people, it is cosy, and good atmosphere, and their cheesecake is to die for (and the chokkie cake look damn good also!)

Fallas 2010
One of my most favourite time in Spain is Fallas time.
Just the whole fiesta always has me amazed, and how relaxed everyone can be when they close down main roads in town for a week or more to build a Fallas, have a party, throw fireworks and banger at each other, the Fallas Queens in their dresses, then burn the lot down in a big fiesta on the 19th March in a big "up yours" to Elf n Safety.
One from 2007 in a small street in Valencia:
Its always an experience going down to Valencia and seeing the 2pm Mascletà. Thousands of people flock to the city centre out side the town hall for the 2pm spectacular. You feel the ground shacking as the "bomb" go off, and you cannot help wondering about how the glass in the buildings around you stays in!
The Mascletà is covered on TV, and they even have a decibel meter level on the screen to show you how loud it can be.
The Fallas can be huge, and have been in preparation for many months, and usually have a humourous side to them, usually at the expense of polititians or world events.....
Then they wait until the firemen arrive. Not to put out the burning fallas, but to spray the nearby buildings with water to stop them from burning whilst the fallas burn away. Sad to see all that time money and effort go to waste, but good when the huge cheers from the crowd happens as the fallas topples over onto itself.
Something you would not see in the UK at all, and was one of the times that I liked to visit Spain before I moved over here.

Just the whole fiesta always has me amazed, and how relaxed everyone can be when they close down main roads in town for a week or more to build a Fallas, have a party, throw fireworks and banger at each other, the Fallas Queens in their dresses, then burn the lot down in a big fiesta on the 19th March in a big "up yours" to Elf n Safety.
One from 2007 in a small street in Valencia:
Its always an experience going down to Valencia and seeing the 2pm Mascletà. Thousands of people flock to the city centre out side the town hall for the 2pm spectacular. You feel the ground shacking as the "bomb" go off, and you cannot help wondering about how the glass in the buildings around you stays in!
The Mascletà is covered on TV, and they even have a decibel meter level on the screen to show you how loud it can be.

Fallas 2010 in Gandia

Gandia is the capital of the county of La Safor, between the mountains and the beaches of The Mediterranean. Like its much larger neighbour Valencia, Gandia greets the arrival of springtime with a spectacular pyrotechnic festival known as Las Fallas. Various events and entertainments take place over the period of a few days, culminating in the Feast of Saint Joseph on 19 March. All the hard work put into the creation of giant figures of wood and paper go up in smoke in the great bonfires that take place in the evening as part of the Gandia Fallas celebrations.

Fallas 2010 in Valencia
The schedule of events for the Fallas 2010 fiesta is now available.
FEBRUARY 28th (Sunday)
At 07.00 a.m. Despertà (awakening sound fireworks) along Paz street toards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square).
At 12.00 p.m. Music Band Parade from the Plaza de la Virgen towards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square) several music bands march playing typical pasodobles. The parade finish approximately at a quarter to 2 p.m. and at that time all the bands will play together the Pasodoble “El Fallero” (the Fallas anthem)
At 02.00 p.m. Mascletà (sound fireworks) in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (City Hall Square).
At 8.00 p.m. Cridà. La Crida marks the official opening of the Fallas Festival. Crowds of onlookers and all the Fallas Committees gather beneath the Serranos Towers, one of historical Valencia's best-known monuments. After a spectacular inaugural display of light, sound, music and fireworks, the “Fallera Mayor” of Valencia (elected festival queen), surrounded by her Court of Honour and the city authorities, invites everyone to enjoy the imminent fiesta, proclaiming its excellence and virtues.

At 12.00 p.m. Homage to the “Maestro Serrano” , taking place at the monument dedicated to his memory in Reino de Valencia Ave. After finishing, a “Mascletà” will be staged. At 12.00 p.m. Mass in honour of the Patriarch St. Joseph, in the Cathedral Church, staged by the Central Fallas Council and the Carpenters Guild with the attendance of the “Fallas” Queens of Valencia and their Courts of Honour. Mass sung by the "Cathedral Choir" and the orchestra from the Conservatoire José Iturbi from Valencia.

At 07.00 p.m. Cabalgata del Fuego (Fire Parade) along Colon Street with a spectacular firework show in Porta de la Mar Square.
